Ferry lines
Ferry routes in Opter is a support for compiling bookings to shipping companies and planning transport that includes ferry connections. A ferry line can be defined in two different ways in Opter:
A ferry consists of two terminals and the distance between them, with the terminals being the ports between which the ferry travels. For instructions, see Adding a ferry consisting of two terminals and the distance between them.
A ferry only consists of the shipments that are placed on the route operated by the ferry. For instructions, see Adding a ferry consisting only of the shipments that are placed on the route.
A ferry in Opter only has one direction. For example, to add the ferry connection between Stockholm and Helsinki, two ferries have to be added in Opter, one for each direction.
Resources
A ferry in Opter is not a resource.
If you choose that a ferry consists of two terminals and the distance between them, the resource type trailer is always forced to be on the ferry. You choose whether only trailers should travel on the ferry, or whether drivers, vehicles and/or subcontractors should also travel on the ferry. You also choose whether or not drivers, vehicles and/or subcontractors accompanying you on the ferry will continue to have assignments after the ferry. For more information, see Adding a ferry consisting of two terminals and the distance between them.
If you choose to have a ferry consist only of shipments that are placed on the route the ferry runs, the resources that are linked to the shipments also go on the ferry when the shipments are added to a ferry booking. Once shipments have been added to a ferry booking, you can choose to assign other resources to the shipments if so desired.

Route optimisation of missions involving ferry lines
Under Settings > Offices > Weight/Distance, there is a slider for Ferries. There you set the extent to which you want ferries to be used in route optimisation or whether ferries should be avoided altogether. This slider is only used for route optimisation and does not affect the ferry routes you create in Opter.
For more information on how to route optimise orders that include ferry lines, see Route optimisation of ferry missions.
Ferry lines in Opter Driver for iOS
The colours of the leftmost symbol indicate whether the stop is a terminal (1), a regular address (2), or a ferry line (3).
The blue circle indicates that the stop is a ferry line (i.e. a port or terminal). For more information, see Pages, tabs and menus in Opter Driver for iOS.
Link Opter with PTV for correct distances
To get the correct distance, the ferry lines in Opter need to be linked to the ferry lines in PTV. PTV Map&Guide is an optional extra available for an additional fee. For more information, see PTV Map&Guide, Adding a ferry consisting of two terminals and the distance between them and Adding a ferry consisting only of the shipments that are placed on the route.
