Adding a ferry consisting of two terminals and the distance between them
A ferry in Opter can be defined in two different ways. You choose which of the following ways you want to define a ferry:
A ferry consists of two terminals and the distance between them, with the terminals being the ports between which the ferry travels.
A ferry only consists of the shipments that are placed on the route operated by the ferry. For instructions, see Adding a ferry consisting only of the shipments that are placed on the route.
The instructions below describe how to add a ferry consisting of two terminals (ports) and the distance between them. For more information about ferries, see Ferry lines.
A ferry only has one direction
A ferry in Opter only has one direction. For example, to add the ferry connection between Stockholm and Helsinki, add two ferries in Opter, one for each direction. These two ferries have the same terminals, but From terminal for one ferry is To terminal for the other ferry, and vice versa.
Adding a ferry
For a ferry consisting of two terminals and the distance between them, it is always mandatory to include the trailer resource type on the ferry. It can be chosen whether only trailers should accompany the ferry, or whether drivers, vehicles and/or subcontractors should also accompany it. It can also be chosen whether or not drivers, vehicles and/or subcontractors travelling on the ferry should continue to have the shipments after the ferry.
Step 1: Create the two terminals (ports) that form the ferry
Click on Register > Terminals.
Click on to create a new terminal. Give the terminal a code and a name, the rest is optional. For more information, see Terminals, window.
Click on to save all changes.
Click on to create the second terminal to be included in the ferry. Give the terminal a code and a name, the rest is optional.
Click on to save all changes.
On the Pricing and splitting tab in the Keep resource after splitting and set same resource to next shipments during assignment field, configure the same settings for both terminals included in the ferry:
The Driver checkbox. Deselect this checkbox because you have chosen to only have trailers included in the ferry.
The Vehicle checkbox. Deselect this checkbox because you have chosen to only have trailers included in the ferry.
The Trailer checkbox.
Obs!
It does not matter whether this checkbox is selected or deselected, because it is always mandatory to include the trailer resource type in the ferry in this scenario, i.e. when the ferry consists of two terminals and the distance between them.
The Subcontractor checkbox. Deselect this checkbox because you have chosen to only have trailers included in the ferry.
Click on to save all changes.
Configure the same settings on the Pricing and splitting tab in the Keep resource after splitting and set same resource to next shipments during assignment field for the second terminal that makes up the ferry line.
Click on to save all changes.
Step 2: Add a ferry
This is how to create a ferry (ferry line) consisting of a From terminal and a To terminal, and the route between them:
- Click on Register > Ferries.
- Click on to create a new ferry.
- Give the ferry a Name, for example “STO-HEL”, to indicate that the direction of the ferry is Stockholm to Helsinki.
Enter the ferry terminals (ports) between which the ferry line runs in the From terminal and To terminal drop-down lists.
The Automatically split shipments at terminals checkbox is used to configure how to define a ferry in Opter. Select the checkbox to define a ferry as two terminals (ports) and the route between them.
Enter the ferry’s Departure time, Arrival time, Plus days and Schedule. For information about how to fill in these fields, see Ferries (window).
Click on to save all changes.
Step 3: Link Opter with PTV to get correct distances
To get the correct distance, the ferry lines in Opter need to be linked to the ferry lines in PTV. We recommend that you do this for all your ferry lines, but make the setting for one ferry line at a time. More information about PTV is available in PTV Map&Guide.
