Home location for vehicles and drivers
Home location can be used to ensure that routes start/end close to the resource’s home so that the system can optimise the route sequence for shipments so that resources are used as efficiently as possible.
A home location can be set for a vehicle or driver by selecting a location on the map or entering the coordinates. The home location can then be used as the start and/or end position of the vehicle or driver for route optimisation:
-
For manual route optimisation, it is possible to choose whether the home location of the resource is used as the start and/or end position.
-
For automatic route optimisation, it can be set up so that the home location of the resource is used as the end position.
Route optimisation works best if dispatching is carried out on vehicles, but it also works if carried out on drivers.
A fallback position can also be set for vehicles and drivers. For more information, see Vehicle position.
Step 1: Set the home location for the resource
If dispatching is being carried out on vehicles, set the home location in the vehicle registry. If dispatching is being carried out on drivers, set the home location on the drivers.
To set a home location for a vehicle, proceed as follows:
-
Click on Register > Vehicles and select a vehicle from the list on the left.
-
Click on the Route optimisation tab.
-
Click on next to Home location and select a location on the map or enter the location’s coordinates.
If there is a setting there already that is to be changed, click on next to Home location and select a new location on the map, or enter the coordinates of the new location.
-
Click on Save on the map.
-
Click on to save all changes.
To set a home location for a driver, proceed as follows:
-
Click on Register > Employees and select a driver from the list on the left.
-
Click on the Details tab.
-
Click on next to Home location and select a location on the map or enter the location’s coordinates.
If there is a setting there already that is to be changed, click on next to Home location and select a new location on the map, or enter the coordinates of the new location.
-
Click on Save on the map.
-
Click on to save all changes.
Step 2: Specify that the home location is to be used for route optimisation
Manual route optimisation
When route optimisation is carried out, it is possible to specify where the routes should start and/or end in the Route optimization window. One option for the start and end positions is the home location that was set up in step 1 above. Proceed as follows:
-
In dispatch, select one or more shipments and press F9 to open the Route optimization window, or right-click on a resource box and select Route optimize.
-
Select the vehicles to be included in route optimisation.
-
Select [Home location] from the Vehicles must start route at drop-down list.
If a vehicle does not have a Home location in the vehicle registry, the vehicle’s current location is used if the Use position and calculate driving time to first stop checkbox is selected in the route optimisation settings (see Route optimization settings (window)). If it is not possible to determine a vehicle’s position, for example due to poor mobile coverage, the vehicle’s Fallback position is used if one has been provided (see Vehicle position).
-
Select [Home location] from the Vehicles must end route at drop-down list.
- Adjust any other route optimisation settings and then click on Calculate route sequence.
For more information and examples of how to configure settings for Vehicles must start route at and Vehicles must end route at, see Selecting first and last stops for vehicles.
For more information on manual route optimisation, see Manual route optimisation and Multi-vehicle optimisation.
Automatic route optimisation
To ensure that the home location of the resource is used as the end position for automatic route optimisation, proceed as follows:
-
Click on Settings > Route optimization settings and select the configuration whose setting is to be adjusted from the list on the left.
-
Click on the General tab.
-
Select the Use resource home location as end position if specified checkbox.
If the vehicle or driver has a home location entered in the vehicle or employee registry, it will be used as the end position for automatic route optimisation.
-
Click on to save all changes.
For more information on automatic route optimisation, see Automatic route optimisation.
